Question by Mod Uncle: Are there scanners used by thieves to detect electronics in car boots/trunk? Or is it an urban myth?
I’ve heard stories where thieves use scanners to detect if there are computers, cell phones, etc locked up in the trunks of cars. Do such devices exist or is it an urban myth?

The technology IS there, but if it is on the street or not, I don’t know.

Electronic devices give off “signatures” that can be identified. In use, this is easy. After being cut-off, I’m not sure if they can be picked up as easily. There would be radiation and current that remains slightly active for a period afterward, but to read it through a metal car body is going to be the trick.

IF it is in use, I doubt it would be with street level thugs. The cost would be massive, as the parts would be custom jobs, not swiped from Radio Shack. If it could, doctors wouldn’t need primitive diagnostic tools that they use, but have the technology to read your vitals from across the room (you give off much planner signatures that machine does).

I would, at this point, put this as an Urban Myth in the same range as faked moon landings and UFOs. If it is in use, they are hunting more than cheap electronics we use for work or play.
